Omis Searches for Colours

Kotryna Reimerytė, Salvija Vaičikonytė. Omis ieško spalvų (Omis Searches for colours), Kaunas: Charity and Support Fund Švieskime vaikus, 2025. – 41 p.

Omis Searches for Colours is a cosy and warm story about a little penguin named Omis, who begins to wonder about colours. Omis lives with his mother, father, and sister in a colourless white house on an ice floe. His curiosity about colours becomes the central theme of the story. Together with his family, Omis sets out on a journey and discovers the colours red, blue, yellow, and green. After learning about colours, Omis finally dreams a colourful dream – something he had never dreamed before his journey. Young readers are introduced to colours not only through Omis’ discoveries but also through Salvija Vaičikonytė’s illustrations. The clear graphic silhouettes of the characters stand out against the white backgrounds of the images, just like the main colours Omis is searching for. The gentle texture of watercolour paper, together with recognisable small details in the drawings – cups, a clock hanging on the wall, a flower decorating the house – creates a warm atmosphere. The book encourages children to recognise colours and explore the world around them.
