Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875–1911) is Lithuania’s most famous artist, painter, composer and cultural figure. He studied at the Leipzig Conservatory and the Warsaw School of Fine Arts. Čiurlionis enriched European modernist art during the late 19th century and early 20th century with his original works that synthesised painting and music (sonatas, fugues, preludes). He is considered one of the pioneers of abstract painting and created over 300 paintings and graphic works. His multi-layered compositions feature elements of Symbolism, Secession and Art Nouveau, as well as cosmological, religious, historical-philosophical and psychological themes. His works are distinguished by rhythmic compositions and delicate yet expressive colour harmonies. Some of his most famous works include Pasaka (Karalių pasaka) (Fairy Tale (The Kings’ Tale), 1909), Rex (1909), and Sonata Nr. 5 (Jūros sonata) (Sonata No. 5 (The Sea Sonata), 1908). His artistic legacy is preserved at the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art in Kaunas, Lithuania. Art albums featuring M. K. Čiurlionis’ paintings, designed for babies and young children, are recommended to be explored together with adults. This book showcases 12 artworks from his cycle Pasaulio sukūrimas (Creation of the World) (1905–1906). The authors invite children to explore the illustrations, observe the colours, and establish an emotional connection with the mesmerising world of this renowned artist’s imagination. Each spread features one painting, accompanied by a monochromatic page that highlights its mood and colour palette. The thick white line on this page outlines a minimalistic graphic drawing that repeats 2–3 of the painting’s most striking objects and lines, drawing attention to the composition, rhythm or specific details. A few poetic sentences guide the reader’s journey from one painting to the next, offering a starting point for dialogue between the child and the companion book. According to the creators of the series, the images and experiences imprinted in early childhood stay with a person throughout their life.
