Project: Altas Viator tourist class bus

Created: 2018

Manufacturer: Altas Аuto

This is the first bus designed and created in the 30 years of Lithuania’s independence, conceived by the young Lithuanian designer Dominykas Budinas (b. 1994). Altas Auto, a manufacturer of mini- and midibuses, commissioned Budinas to create a concept for a new tourist class bus for long-distance travel. The vehicle’s unique features include stable dynamics, maintaining contrast between sharp dynamic lines and clean surfaces, a geometry and feeling of motion created by the rims and rounded corners, the combination of two colour tones and a solution introduced to conceal air-conditioning units. The bus was first presented in 2018 at the IAA Hannover, the largest commercial transportation exhibition in Europe, and won a silver medal in the A’ Design Award competition in 2019. Regular production of the bus was launched in late 2019.

Budinas, who specializes in transportation design, graduated from the Design Department of the Vilnius Academy of Arts in 2017. He is intrigued by the search for new solutions to all sorts of modes of transportation – from the creation of concept models, to designing production details and graphic detailing. While still a student, Budinas drew attention with his concept for Air Shield (Oro skydas in Lithuanian), a baby carrier with an air filtration system, which won second place in the Electrolux Design Lab international competition in Helsinki. Budinas’ 2017 thesis project, the PICKIT modular pickup truck, earned him the Young Designer’s Prize.

Budinas’ most prominent project, however, is one which has already been put into practice:  a design for a new fleet of Lithuanian police cars that perfectly showcases the agency’s desire to revitalize its mission to become more dynamic, open and – thanks to the use of reflective materials – more visible.
