Gintaras Grajauskas
The poet, playwright, essayist and prose writer Gintaras Grajauskas (b. 1966) first entered the theatre as the author of poems. Benas Šarka, a theatre director resident in Grajauskas’s hometown, Klaipėda (at the Gliukų Theatre), started producing theatrical performances based on Grajauskas’s poetry which went on to receive a lot of attention both in Lithuania and abroad. These performances include Keafri (1997), Co Ca Cola (1998), A gu (2001) and others.
Critics often praise Grajauskas’s plays for the layers underlying the light dialogue, and for the characterful perspective of contemporary and historical Lithuania. His plays are very well liked by readers. The playwright is admired by leading Lithuanian directors such as Oskaras Koršunovas and Jonas Vaitkus. Two collections of his plays have now been published: Mergaitė, kurios bijojo Dievas (A Girl Whom God Was Afraid of 2007, Lietuvos rašytojų sąjungos leidykla) and Kas prieš mus (Who Is Against Us, 2019, Lietuvos rašytojų sąjungos leidykla).
One of Grajauskas’s most recent plays, Pašaliniams draudžiama (Keep Out, 2016), directed by Oskaras Koršunovas at Klaipėda Drama Theatre, focuses on the lost generation which was born and bred during the Soviet years and later took part in the Reform Movement of Lithuania. The play suggests that not everyone adapted to the changes during that time – people who didn’t become racketeers were forced to be outsiders. It’s a highly personal creative work whose protagonist is a poet searching for his place in a numbed society, wandering among ghosts.
