Birutė Kapustinskaitė
Birutė Kapustinskaitė (b. 1989) is a Lithuanian author from the young generation who successfully expresses herself in both cinema and theatre. She graduated in screenwriting at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. The most exceptional feature of the artist’s works is the vivid characters and the remarkable dialogues which they enter, immersive in their natural lightness. In theatre, the playwright mostly works with the director Paulius Markevičius and the Art and Science Laboratory, which they established together. The artists experiment together, looking for new forms, interesting topics, and a theatrical language which communicates with contemporary youth. This is how the theatre performances Dvi su puse minutės (Two and a Half Minutes), Šiaurės miestelis (North Town), and Signalai (Signalai) were made.
Kapustinskaitė’s debut play Terapijos (Therapies) is her most memorable work which gave a strong start to her career in theatre. It is a tragicomical play about six women in a single chemotherapy ward. The playwright was inspired to write it while nursing her mother and parting with her. The play won the Golden Cross of the Stage Award in 2018. It was staged at the Oskaras Koršunovas Theatre (directed by Kirilas Glušajevas). In 2019, the play was translated into Korean and staged at the Dream Theatre in Seoul, South Korea (directed by Insoo Lee)
