David Geringas
The cellist and conductor David Geringas belongs to Europe’s musical elite. His unusually broad repertoire, from early baroque to contemporary, is a testament to his flexibility and curiosity. His intellectual rigor, his stylistic versatility, his melodic feeling, and the sensuousness of his tone have brought him praise from all over the world.
A pupil of Rostropovich and a gold-medal winner of the 1970 Tchaikovsky Competition, Geringas has had a long and impressive career. He has performed with leading orchestras and important conductors of our times.
His releases, which are now approaching 100 CDs, include many that have been honored with important prizes from the classical music world. Well-known contemporary composers, such as Sofia Gubaidulina, Ned Rorem, Anatolijus Šenderovas, Pēteris Vasks, Erkki-Sven Tüür, have dedicated cello concertos to him. He appears regularly as a conductor, and frequently in a dual role as conductor and cellist.
For several decades, Geringas has taught a world-famous cello class, from which stars of the cello have emerged, such as Gustav Rivinius, Jens Peter Maintz, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, Tatiana Vassilieva, Jing Zhao, Johannes Moser and Sol Gabetta.
