Ignas Krunglevičius
Composer and visual artist Ignas Krunglevičius (born 1979) creates sound and visual installations, video art, and objects, in which he explores the power structures formed by new technologies, and the mechanisms of the human psyche. His work is often based on group therapy sessions, documentary material from police interrogations, and psychiatric review manuals – using them as a springboard, and by exploiting the persuasive power of sound, colour, and semantic phrase, Krunglevičius creates situations that elicit empathy with a desired psychological state. He is interested in the methods and systems used in society to control individuals and situations.
Having graduated from the Norwegian Academy of Music with a degree in music composition, Ignas Krunglevičius creates musical performances and has participated in film and electronic and contemporary music festivals as well as at the 6th Moscow International Biennalle for Young Art (2018). He has exhibited in solo shows at the Kunsthall Oslo, Lydgalleriet in Bergen, Vartai Gallery in Vilnius; and group shows at various institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCAK) in Kraków, Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo, the Contemporary Art Centre in Vilnius, Ursula Blickle Stiftung in Germany, Oslo Kunstforening, the Łaźnia Centre for Contemporary Art in Gdańsk, and elsewhere. His works were presented at the 19th Biennale of Sydney and the 14th Venice Biennale of Architecture. He was nominated for the Nam June Paik Award in 2010, which included an exhibition at the Kunstpalast in Dusseldorf. In 2009, he was awarded the Sparebankstiftelsen DnB NOR stipendutstilling Art Prize; his work was shown at the Kassel Documentary Film and Video Art Festival in 2009, where he received an honorary mention.
