Project: GIRIA tree bark objects
Created: 2015-2019
GIRIA is an ongoing project by designer Evelina Kudabaitė (b. 1990) inspired by Lithuania’s forests and the pursuit of sustainability. The idea was first presented in 2015 as Kudabaitė’s bachelor’s degree thesis project at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. Using tree bark dust from different sawmills, Kudabaitė drew on the experience of traditional craftsmen and experimentation to find an organic binding material, creating a unique homeware collection in the process. GIRIA includes tableware, vases, candle holders and sculptural objects which gently convey the sensation of the forest through colour, shape, texture, and even smell.
Evelina Kudabaitė graduated from the Design Department of the Vilnius Academy of Arts in 2015 and is an active participant in design exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad. She usually creates small design objects, from homeware items to pieces of furniture. Kudabaitė devotes considerable attention to sustainability and the search for suitable materials and processing techniques. She not only promotes her own custom collections, but also collaborates with other brands. Her projects have received Good Design diplomas and awards. Kudabaitė views the objects she creates through her understanding of transformation, seeking to create an opportunity to perceive everyday processes from a new perspective.
