LITHUANIA CONTINUED ITS STORY AT THE LEIPZIG BOOK FAIR!

Lietuvos kultūros institutas

On 21-24 March, Lithuanian literature returned to the international Leipzig Book Fair, where Lithuania participated as a guest of honour in 2017 with exceptional success. The slogan ”The Story Continues” became the constant leitmotif of the Lithuanian literature carving out a strong place for itself in the German cultural sphere.

Indeed, the Lithuanian Culture Institute continues collaboration with Austrian, Swiss and German publishers, which has been intensified even before the Leipzig Book Fair 2017.  This year, the institute invited the visitors of the fair and the festival ”Leipzig liest” (“Leipzig  Reads”) to the launches of as many as three new books by Lithuanian authors that appeared in German: Markus Roduner’s translations of I. Simonaitytė’s novel ”Vilius Karalius“ (publishing house “BaltArt“) and M. Petuchauskas’ memoir “Price of Concord” (publishing house “LIT Verlag“), and U. Radzevičiūtė’s novel “Kraujas mėlynas“ (“Blue Blood”), translated by Cornelius Hell (publishing house “Residenz Verlag“). The latter is already the second book by this author published in Austria – in 2017, the publishing house “Residenz Verlag“ successfully presented to its readers the German translation of U. Radzevičiūtė’s novel “Žuvys ir drakonai“ (“Fishes and Dragons”).

These new publications were launched at the Leipzig Book Fair, while the festival “Leipzig liest“ hosted the Lithuanian events in the popular club “naTo“, the Leipzig University Library  “Bibliotheca Albertina“ and the Jewish Culture Centre-Ariowitsch Haus.

The translations of the books presented in Leipzig were financed with the funds of the Translation Grant Programme of the Lithuanian Culture Institute.
