With a musical career spanning nearly two decades, Donatas Bielkauskas, best known under his stage name Donis but also running a few side projects like d.n.s. and Wejdas (with Darius Gerulaitis), has something to offer both those looking for a more accessible, ambient electronic post-folk sound and those eager to expand the sonic limits to areas that are harder to pinpoint, such as minimalistic and slow-flowing drone trips. Under his most recognizable alias, he has released acclaimed collaborations with a number of traditional folk singers and musicians like the Kūlgrinda ensemble and a member of the latter Žemyna Trinkūnaitė, a prominent kanklės (Lithuanian zither) player and composer. Yet it is his duo with the singer Rasa Serra that perhaps signifies the trademark sound of Donis that most of his following has come to expect and admire – song-oriented and based on dreamy archaic harmonies, albeit arranged using modern means. Donis’ works are regularly released by the major Lithuanian post-folk label Dangus and the more industrial-centred Autarkeia imprint.
